A sheltered bay with
turtles in the shallows

Unawatuna is one of Sri Lanka's most beloved beaches β€” a perfect horseshoe bay of calm turquoise water, five minutes from the walls of Galle Fort, with a living coral reef, resident sea turtles, a hidden jungle cove and a beach restaurant strip that comes alive every evening under string lights and the sound of the sea.

β€œThe turtle surfaces two metres from you, regards you with one ancient eye, and continues feeding as if you are simply part of the reef β€” which, for that moment, you are. There are not many places left in the world where this still happens.”

Beach & Reef

The Bay, the Reef & the Underwater World

Unawatuna's horseshoe bay is formed by a geological accident of extraordinary good fortune: the coral reef that arcs across its mouth breaks the ocean swell before it reaches the beach, creating a protected swimming area of calm, clear water that remains accessible for most of the year. The reef itself is the bay's second great attraction β€” a living ecosystem of coral heads, sea fans and tropical fish that extends from the beach in shallow water easily reachable by snorkellers of any ability. Green sea turtles are the reef's most celebrated residents: several individuals have spent years feeding on the sea grass meadows inside the bay and are regularly encountered within a few metres of the beach, their unhurried movements and apparent comfort in the presence of respectful snorkellers making each encounter feel intimate and personal. The eastern end of the bay, near the Japanese Peace Pagoda that crowns the headland, has the most productive snorkelling, with the densest coral and the greatest fish diversity. Glass-bottom boat operators offer an alternative for visitors who prefer not to snorkel, and diving courses and day trips to the offshore wrecks and deeper reefs are available from the beach operators who line the bay.

Walks & Views

Jungle Beach, the Peace Pagoda & the Headland Walk

Unawatuna's charms extend well beyond the main beach. The coastal path that climbs the eastern headland from the bay's far end leads, within 15 minutes, to Jungle Beach β€” a secluded cove of white sand entirely surrounded by jungle-clad cliffs, with no road access and no accommodation behind it. The contrast with Unawatuna's lively beach strip is complete: at Jungle Beach there is only the sound of the waves, the occasional hornbill overhead and the feeling of having found something the maps have not yet caught up with. The path continues upward to the Japanese Peace Pagoda, a gleaming white stupa built in 1979 by the Nipponzan-Myohoji Buddhist order and now managed by a small community of Japanese monks. The views from the pagoda's platform β€” over Unawatuna bay, along the southern coastline and inland toward the forested hills behind Galle β€” are among the finest accessible panoramas in the region. The entire circular walk, taking in the pagoda, Jungle Beach and the return along the coast, makes an excellent two-hour morning circuit that provides context, exercise and some of the most beautiful views on the southern coast.

Food & Galle

Galle Fort, Dining & the Best of Both Worlds

Unawatuna's defining advantage as a base for the southern coast is the five-kilometre proximity to Galle Fort β€” a UNESCO World Heritage Site whose cobblestone streets, boutique hotels, art galleries, restaurants and four centuries of colonial architecture represent the finest urban experience on the southern coast. The tuk-tuk ride from Unawatuna beach to the fort takes ten minutes; the return equally so β€” close enough for an evening of fort dining and a moonlit walk on the ramparts without committing to a hotel inside the fort's premium-priced walls. The beachfront restaurant strip at Unawatuna is lively, affordable and offers an excellent range: fresh grilled seafood, Sri Lankan rice and curry, thin-crust pizza, smoothie bowls and cocktails served at tables set a few metres from the tide. The Wijaya Beach and Nooit Gedacht Heritage Hotel are the most established dining addresses, but the best discoveries are made by simply walking the strip at dusk and letting the smell of grilling fish and coconut oil make the decision. Unawatuna is not a quiet place in the evening β€” the beach fills with a mix of local and international visitors, the restaurant speakers play reggae and the lights of the bay create a festive atmosphere that continues long after dark.

Traveller's Notes

Everything you need to know

🐒

Turtle Snorkelling

The best turtle snorkelling is at the eastern end of the bay near the Japanese Peace Pagoda. Go early morning (7–9 AM) before the beach crowds arrive. Rent a mask and fins from any beach stall for around LKR 500. Maintain a respectful distance β€” do not touch or chase.

πŸ₯Ύ

Jungle Beach Walk

Follow the coastal path from the eastern end of the beach, climbing past the Peace Pagoda and descending to Jungle Beach. Allow 15–20 minutes each way. Wear shoes β€” the path is rocky in sections. The beach has no facilities, so bring water. Avoid the midday heat.

🏰

Galle Fort Day Trip

Take a tuk-tuk to Galle Fort (10 minutes, LKR 300–400) for lunch, a rampart walk at sunset and dinner at one of the fort's excellent restaurants. Return to Unawatuna by 10 PM when the fort quietens. The evening light on the fort walls is at its most beautiful between 5–7 PM.

🀿

Scuba Diving

Several dive operators on Unawatuna beach offer PADI courses and day dives to offshore wrecks including the Rangoon β€” a 19th-century steamer in 23 metres. The wreck is excellent for beginners and the surrounding reef holds impressive fish life. Book 24 hours ahead.

Where to Eat

The best local rice and curry is served at the small restaurants on the inland lane parallel to the beach road. For seafood and sundowners on the sand, the beach strip delivers. Wijaya Beach and South Ceylon restaurants are consistently reliable. Galle Fort (10 min) opens a world of dining options.

🏨

Where to Stay

Beachfront guesthouses along the bay give direct sand access. Boutique hotels on the hillside above the bay offer views and more privacy. For fort access, staying at the Unawatuna end of the Galle-Unawatuna road puts you equidistant between both. Book 6–8 weeks ahead in December–March.
