Waist-deep for a kilometre β€”
the east coast's perfect bay

Pasikuda is the east coast's most famous beach β€” a naturally sheltered bay where a fringing reef keeps the water flat, shallow and impossibly clear for nearly a kilometre from the shore. It is Sri Lanka's finest family swimming beach, and the perfect monsoon-season escape when the west coast is wet and rough.

The Shallowest, Calmest Bay in Sri Lanka

01 / 04
β€œYou walk into the sea at Pasikuda and keep walking, and the water stays at your waist, and the bottom stays sandy and clean underfoot, and the horizon stays blue and enormous, and at some point you realise you have been in the sea for three hours and have not wanted to leave.”

The Bay

The Shallow Bay β€” Swimming Perfection on the East Coast

Pasikuda's reputation rests on a single extraordinary geological fact: the natural reef that curves across the mouth of the bay creates a protected lagoon of such exceptional shallowness and gentleness that it has been drawing visitors since the colonial era, when it was known as one of the finest bathing beaches in Ceylon. The water at Pasikuda remains between knee and waist depth for approximately 800 metres from the shore β€” a sandy-bottomed, crystal-clear expanse of warm sea that is essentially a vast natural swimming pool. The reef that produces these conditions is also responsible for the bay's remarkable clarity: it filters the incoming ocean water while breaking the swell, leaving the lagoon surface glassy and undisturbed except by the wind. The east coast dry season runs from approximately May to September, when the northeast monsoon has passed and the seas are consistently calm β€” this is Pasikuda's peak season and the period of finest conditions. During the west coast monsoon months of May to October, Pasikuda is at its most beautiful while the west coast beaches are rough and rain-affected, making it one of the most valuable weather refuges for travellers who want a beach holiday during the traditionally difficult months. The bay is large enough that even during the peak school holiday periods it rarely feels crowded β€” the 800-metre shallow shelf distributes visitors across a vast area, and it is easy to find a quiet section of beach even on the busiest days.

Reef & Kalkudah

Kalkudah, the Reef & the Waters Beyond

Pasikuda sits adjacent to Kalkudah β€” a longer, more exposed beach that shares the same headland and offers a completely different character. Where Pasikuda is sheltered, Kalkudah is open; where Pasikuda's water is glassy and predictable, Kalkudah's can be lively with swell on the right conditions. The headland path connecting the two beaches is one of the finest short coastal walks on the east coast, offering views over both bays simultaneously from its highest point β€” the contrast between the turquoise stillness of Pasikuda to the south and the longer, wilder arc of Kalkudah to the north captures the east coast's variety in a single panorama. Beyond the shallows, the natural reef at Pasikuda's outer edge deserves exploration. Snorkelling boat trips take fifteen minutes to reach the reef edge where the sandy bottom gives way to coral formations of reasonable diversity β€” hard corals, staghorn and table varieties, sea fans in the deeper sections, and the fish populations that accompany them: sergeant majors, angelfish, moorish idols and the occasional turtle resting on the reef before surfacing for breath. Reef condition has improved significantly since the protection and relative quiet of the post-conflict period, and the east coast reef system at Pasikuda is now regarded as one of the more intact on Sri Lanka's eastern seaboard.

East Coast

The East Coast β€” Temples, Lagoons & a Region Rediscovering Itself

The region surrounding Pasikuda and Kalkudah is the east coast at its most characterful β€” a stretch of coastline shaped by Tamil, Muslim and Sinhalese communities living alongside each other in a landscape of extraordinary natural richness. The Kudumbigala forest monastery, 40 kilometres south near Arugam Bay, is one of the oldest and most atmospheric Buddhist forest monasteries in Sri Lanka β€” its ancient rock cells and meditation platforms set in undisturbed jungle above the coastal plain. The Batticaloa lagoon, 35 kilometres north, is one of the largest lagoon systems in Sri Lanka and famous for its singing fish β€” a phenomenon where the fish of the lagoon produce an audible musical hum, most clearly heard by lowering an oar or paddle into the water at certain times. Batticaloa Fort β€” built by the Portuguese in 1628 and subsequently occupied and rebuilt by the Dutch and British β€” stands at the lagoon's edge and is one of the few three-nation colonial fortifications in Asia. The Muslim fishing villages strung along the coast between Pasikuda and Batticaloa operate with an intensity of daily activity that is riveting to watch at dawn β€” the boats are dragged up the beach through the surf, the catch sorted under the palm trees and the fish loaded onto motorbikes for distribution to the inland markets before seven in the morning.

Traveller's Notes

Everything you need to know

🌊

Best Swimming Season

May to September is the prime east coast season β€” the northeast monsoon has passed, seas are glassy and the shallow bay is at its finest. This is the period when the west coast is wet and rough, making Pasikuda one of Sri Lanka's most valuable fair-weather beach alternatives.

🀿

Reef Snorkelling

Book a reef snorkel boat trip through your hotel β€” trips to the outer reef take 15 minutes by boat and last 1–1.5 hours. The reef is best on a calm morning before any afternoon wind chop. Bring reef-safe sunscreen and ask your operator about current coral condition.

🚢

Kalkudah Walk

Walk the headland path between Pasikuda and Kalkudah β€” allow 30 minutes each way and go in the morning or late afternoon for the best light. The highest point of the path offers a simultaneous view of both bays. Kalkudah is less developed and better for solitary beach time.

🏯

Batticaloa Day Trip

Batticaloa town is 35 km north β€” the fort, the lagoon singing fish and the daily fish market at Kallady Bridge are all worth a half-day visit. Go on a Wednesday or Saturday morning when the market is at its most active. The lagoon singing fish are best heard on a calm evening by boat.

Where to Eat

Pasikuda's resort hotels serve good food but at resort prices. For local flavour, the small restaurants and kades on the coast road between Pasikuda and Kalkudah serve excellent east coast rice and curry with fresh fish at a fraction of the hotel price. String hoppers with fish curry is the east coast breakfast of champions.

🏨

Where to Stay

Pasikuda has developed a cluster of mid-range and upscale resort hotels directly on the bay β€” Amaya Beach, Uga Bay and Maalu Maalu Resort are the most established. Book 6–8 weeks ahead for the May–September peak. For a quieter and cheaper stay, small guesthouses at Kalkudah offer direct beach access at local prices.
