Sri Lanka's Most Vibrant Beach Town

โ€œHikkaduwa has been Sri Lanka's beach town for longer than most of its current visitors have been alive. The reef, the turtles, the surf and the evening strip are all still there โ€” and none of them have become any less remarkable with time.โ€

Marine Life

The Coral Reef โ€” Sri Lanka's Most Accessible Marine Sanctuary

Hikkaduwa's fringing coral reef is the town's most important natural asset and the reason it developed into a beach resort in the first place. Protected as a national sanctuary, the reef runs parallel to the beach for approximately two kilometres in water ranging from two to eight metres deep โ€” shallow enough for snorkellers of any ability to see the main attractions without diving equipment. Glass-bottom boats depart from the beach throughout the day, their hulls floating over table corals, brain corals and the dense fish populations that shelter within them โ€” parrotfish grazing on the coral, battalions of sergeant major fish patrolling the shallower sections, hawksbill turtles moving through the reef with unhurried authority. The green sea turtles of Hikkaduwa are particularly well-known: several individuals have been feeding on the reef's sea grass beds for many years and are encountered on almost every snorkel trip. While the reef suffered significant bleaching damage in past warm-water events, careful management and protected status have allowed substantial recovery, and the coral gardens at the northern end of the sanctuary are now genuinely impressive. Scuba diving is offered by several operators based on the beach road, with dives to deeper sections of the reef, to the nearby wrecks and to the wall dive at the southern end of the sanctuary offering experiences for divers at every level.

Surf & Beach

Surf, Swim & the Long Golden Beach

Hikkaduwa's beach is one of the longest and most varied on the west coast โ€” a broad strip of golden sand that stretches for over three kilometres from the quiet northern end near Narigama to the more developed southern section near the town centre. The beach is wide enough to find space even in peak season, the sand is clean, the water is warm year-round and the reef-sheltered sections provide safe swimming for families and non-surfers. The surf is the beach's other major attraction. The main break at the centre of the bay produces consistent, well-shaped waves from November to April โ€” a beach break that handles beginners at the smaller end of its range and offers genuine challenge to experienced surfers when the swell reaches 2 metres. The reef break at the northern end, known as Benny's Reef, is a hollow right-hander over a coral shelf that holds on larger swells and is regarded as one of the better quality reef breaks on the west coast. Surf schools have operated in Hikkaduwa since the early days of the sport in Sri Lanka, and the quality of instruction available โ€” from basic beginner lessons to technique coaching for intermediates โ€” is among the highest on the coast.

Town Life

The Strip, the Market & Hikkaduwa's Cultural Texture

Hikkaduwa is a town with genuine texture โ€” accumulated over decades of beach tourism into a place that is simultaneously a proper Sri Lankan coastal town and an international resort of considerable sophistication. The beach road strip, lined with restaurants, bars, surf shops, batik stalls, gem merchants and travel agents, is the most entertaining stretch of commercial beachfront on the west coast. The nightly live music scene โ€” reggae and rock played in open-sided venues set a few metres from the tide โ€” is genuinely good, drawing local musicians of real quality rather than merely volume. The Sunday market in the town centre draws both locals and visitors and offers an excellent range of local produce, street food, handicrafts and the fresh catch from the morning's fishing boats. The Seenigama Muhudu Vihara โ€” a small Buddhist temple set on a tiny rocky island just offshore โ€” is one of the most characterful religious sites on the west coast, accessible by boat and a place of genuine local devotion. The Tsunami Museum, housed in a train that was overturned by the 2004 wave, is a sobering and moving reminder of the event that reshaped this coastline and the community that rebuilt itself with remarkable speed and determination.

Traveller's Notes

Everything you need to know

๐Ÿคฟ

Snorkel & Dive

Glass-bottom boat tours run from the beach throughout the day (LKR 1,000โ€“1,500 per person). For snorkelling, hire equipment from the beach operators and wade in from the shore โ€” the reef begins within 50 metres. Diving courses and fun dives are available from several operators on the beach road.

๐Ÿข

Sea Turtles

Green and hawksbill turtles feed on the reef daily. Early morning snorkels (7โ€“9 AM) offer the best encounters before the glass-bottom boat traffic increases. Treat the turtles with respect โ€” do not touch, block or approach them head-on. They will come to you if you remain still.

๐Ÿ„

Surf Conditions

November to April is the main surf season. The beach break works best at mid-tide on a 1โ€“1.5m southwest swell. Benny's Reef at the northern end is a hollow right-hander for experienced surfers only โ€” check conditions before paddling out. Surf schools on the beach offer lessons from LKR 2,500.

๐ŸŽต

Nightlife

The beach strip comes alive from 7 PM. Vibration Bar and Spaghetti & Co are long-established live music venues. The scene is relaxed rather than wild โ€” good food, cold Arrack cocktails and live reggae rather than club music. Most venues wind down by midnight.

๐Ÿ›

Where to Eat

Refresh Restaurant on the beach road is a Hikkaduwa institution. For the freshest seafood, the restaurants at the northern quieter end of the strip are cheaper and the fish comes directly from the morning boats. Sunday market in the town centre has excellent street food from early morning.

๐Ÿจ

Where to Stay

The northern section of the beach (Narigama) is quieter and better for families. The central strip is livelier and better for nightlife access. Budget guesthouses to boutique beach hotels are all available. The Coral Sands Hotel and Hikka Tranz by Cinnamon are the most established larger properties.
