β€œElla is the kind of village that keeps your bag packed for a week and your ticket unbooked for longer. The valley is always there when you wake up, and it is always different, and it is always enough.”

Train & Bridge

Nine Arch Bridge & the Train That Made Ella Famous

The Kandy-to-Ella train journey is consistently ranked among the most scenic rail journeys on earth, and for good reason. For approximately six hours, the train climbs through the central highlands, passing waterfalls, tunnels, tea estates and viewpoints that unfurl with the gradual drama of a well-written travel narrative. The section between Nuwara Eliya's Nanu Oya station and Ella is the most celebrated β€” the train rounds bends to reveal valleys dropping away thousands of feet below, winds through Horton Plains cloud forest and crosses the Nine Arch Bridge, a masterpiece of early 20th-century engineering built from handmade brick and local cement without a gram of steel. The bridge's nine 24-metre arches span the Demodara gorge in perfect geometric sequence, framed by jungle and the occasional tea picker. Standing on the embankment as the train crosses β€” particularly if it is one of the older blue InterCity trains β€” and watching the carriages arc over the valley is one of those travel moments that justifies the journey entirely. Book an observation car seat (Class 1 or 2) weeks in advance from Kandy; the journey sells out months ahead during peak season.

Hiking

Hiking Through the Highlands β€” Peaks, Valleys & Waterfalls

Ella is the hiking capital of Sri Lanka β€” a small town with a disproportionate number of excellent trails within easy reach. Little Adam's Peak is the gentlest and most popular: a well-marked path climbing for 45 minutes through tea estates to a summit at 1,141 metres, with views down through the Ella Gap to the flat southern plains visible on clear mornings up to 50 kilometres away. Ella Rock is the more serious alternative β€” a 3.5-hour round trip that requires crossing the railway line and navigating through dense forest to a rocky summit with a genuine sense of remoteness and reward. Rawana Falls, 6 kilometres below Ella on the road toward Wellawaya, is one of the widest waterfalls in Sri Lanka: a broad curtain of water that drops 25 metres over a basalt cliff face and fills a natural pool popular with local visitors at weekends. The Demodara Loop β€” a unique engineering feature where the railway line makes a complete circle within a tunnel to gain elevation β€” is visible from the hill above Ella station and is best understood by a short walk to the viewpoint.

Village Life

The Village, the Gap & Ella's Magnetic Slow Life

Ella is a small highland village β€” main street, a handful of cafes, guesthouses strung along the hillside β€” that has become one of the most visited places in Sri Lanka without quite losing the quality that drew people here in the first place: the extraordinary stillness of a mountain morning, the cloud drifting through the valley, the sound of rain on a tin roof, the smell of wood smoke and tea. The Ella Gap β€” the dramatic opening in the southern escarpment of the hill country through which the valley drops to the plains β€” creates the town's defining view: a long corridor of blue-green valley with, on clear days, the Indian Ocean a silver line on the distant horizon. Every cafe, every guesthouse deck, every hilltop faces this view, and the town's entire social life gravitates around watching it at different hours and in different weathers. The surrounding villages offer craft workshops, local cooking classes and home-stay experiences with tea plantation families. The Bogoda Wooden Bridge β€” 2 kilometres below Ella β€” is a 16th-century wooden canopy bridge, the oldest of its kind in Sri Lanka, crossing the Gallanda Oya river in a single elegant span. Ella is one of those rare places that improves the longer you stay.

Traveller's Notes

Everything you need to know

πŸš‚

The Train to Ella

Book a Class 1 or 2 observation car seat on the Kandy–Ella or Colombo–Ella train weeks in advance β€” they sell out fast. The Kandy to Ella journey takes around 6 hours. Sit on the right side departing Kandy for the best valley views.

πŸŒ…

Nine Arch Bridge

The train crosses the Nine Arch Bridge at approximately 8:45 AM (eastbound from Kandy) and 3:30 PM (westbound). Arrive at the bridge viewpoint 20–30 minutes before for a clear position. The jungle embankment above the bridge gives the best elevated angle.

πŸ₯Ύ

Little Adam's Peak

Start the hike by 6:00 AM to reach the summit for sunrise. The path is well-marked and takes 45 minutes. Wear layers β€” the summit is cold at dawn. The Lonely Planet-famous tea estate path begins near the 98 Acres Resort on the Passara Road.

πŸ”οΈ

Ella Rock Hike

Allow 4 hours for the Ella Rock circuit. Start from Ella station, cross the tracks and follow the path signs. An early start (6:30–7:00 AM) avoids the midday heat and cloud. No guide needed but trail markings can be faint β€” download an offline map.

Where to Eat

The stretch of cafes on Ella's main street has excellent food at very reasonable prices. Cafe Chill and The Matey Hut are long-standing favourites for Western and Sri Lankan fusion. For authentic local rice and curry, the small restaurants near Ella station serve from early morning.

🏨

Where to Stay

Hillside guesthouses with valley views are the best Ella experience β€” Zion View, Ella Flower Garden and 98 Acres Resort offer the finest vistas. Book 6–8 weeks ahead for December–March peak season. Budget guesthouses on the main road are clean, friendly and remarkably cheap.
