Kitulgala — White Water Rafting

Sri Lanka's premier white water on the Kelani River

The standard Kitulgala rafting experience begins with a thorough safety briefing at one of the riverside operators, where helmets, life jackets and paddles are issued and the basic strokes and emergency procedures are demonstrated. The put-in is a short walk upstream from the village, and the descent begins almost immediately with a series of warm-up rapids before the river enters the main gorge. The named rapids — Virgin's Breast, Killer Falls, Head Chopper and Rib Cage among them — sound considerably more intimidating than they actually are; at Class II–III they are challenging enough to be genuinely exciting but well within the capability of any reasonably fit adult, including those with no prior rafting experience. Between the white water sections, the river opens into calm pools where guides typically allow rafters to swim or jump from low cliffs, and the surrounding rainforest — dense, green and loud with birdsong — provides a backdrop that feels far removed from the rest of the country. The full run takes around 2 hours on the water, with the take-out a short van ride from the starting point. The best rafting conditions coincide with the southwest monsoon from May to November, when river levels are highest and the rapids most vigorous; outside this window the run remains operational but the white water becomes notably tamer.

Bentota River — Where the River Meets the Sea

A wide tidal estuary of water sports and quiet boat rides

Bentota's appeal lies in its breadth — both literal and experiential. The river is several hundred metres wide for much of its lower course, with an open tidal character that makes it ideal for jet-skiing, water-skiing, banana boats, wakeboarding and the various inflatable-tube novelties that operators along the riverbank rent by the half-hour. Equally, the same waters lend themselves to gentle boat safaris that probe the quieter creeks where kingfishers, water monitors and the occasional crocodile can be spotted in the riverside vegetation. The signature Bentota experience, however, is the sunset cruise to the river mouth — a 90-minute meander downstream as the light softens and the water turns gold, terminating at the spit of sand where the river crosses the beach to meet the surf. Many operators time the cruise so that the return upstream coincides with full dusk, the riverbank lit by the warm windows of the riverside hotels and restaurants. Boats range from simple outboard skiffs to more elegant catamarans with onboard refreshments. For families with mixed appetites — some seeking adrenaline, others tranquility — Bentota River accommodates everyone within a single afternoon.

Madu River — Mangrove Safari

A 900-hectare wetland of 64 islands and tunnel-like mangrove channels

A standard Madu River safari departs from the boat jetty at Balapitiya, a small town on the main coastal road, and follows a roughly figure-of-eight route through the wider river before entering the densely forested mangrove tunnels for which the Madu is famous. These tunnels are extraordinary — channels barely wider than the boat itself, the dense mangrove canopy closing overhead so completely that the boat is plunged into a green-lit aquatic gloom, the only sounds the boatman's pole and the occasional splash of a fish or frog in the dark water. The wider river opens out periodically to reveal the wetland's island communities: the famous Cinnamon Island, where families have grown and processed Ceylon cinnamon for generations and where visitors can watch the entire processing demonstration; Fish Therapy Island, where small toothless fish nibble dead skin from the feet of bemused tourists; the tiny Buddhist temple island of Kothduwa, accessible only by boat and home to a single resident monk. Wildlife is excellent throughout: water monitor lizards basking on the muddy banks, kingfishers in extraordinary diversity (six species are commonly seen), brahminy kites and grey-headed fish eagles overhead, and — in the mangrove tunnels themselves — water snakes, fish and the occasional crocodile in the wider channels. The whole safari takes around 2 hours and is operated by local boatmen using small outboard skiffs that seat 4–6 passengers.
